![]() ![]() I think D&D is better at making players find their niche, so players start out deciding what they want to be doing in combat and they find the class and feats that allow them to do that. We'd mostly been playing 3.5 and Pathfinder up until then, and I didn't think things like classes, class skills, feats, and other stuff that separates character types fit well in Dark Souls. ![]() My friends and I wanted to run a Dark Souls campaign years ago, but I had trouble finding a system that made sense for it. If anyone here is interested in running a Dark-Souls-esque pen-and-paper game, I might have some useful advice. It's never mindless and even grinding requires focus and attention. But once you start to get a feel for the nuances of different weapon styles and builds it becomes incredibly amazingly diverse.Īlso I love the fact that even a really experienced player with a high level character can still die to the weakest enemies if they're careless. I think the reason most people put the game down (including me during my first attempt) is the difficulty paired with the instinct of most mele builds falling into the generic two play styles: quick and dodgy or large and tanky. Most RPGs have the mechanic of "you found a new sword, it's just like your old one but does more damage" dark souls is more like "you found a new weapon, it does less damage but maybe it swings faster or has better range" etc. If you pick a weapon you like and upgrade it, it is viable trough the late game. One awesome thing about that also is, virtually any weapon can carry you through the final boss. Different weapons matter more than just different stats, they have different move sets, ranges, weights, etc. The combat is relatively simple (right and left hand strong/weak attacks, dodge roll, and two handing are pretty much the only buttons you use) but unbelievably diverse.
